Older Site News...

I have set up a donation page to help raise money for the horrible tragedy caused by an earthquake and resulting tsunami in Asia yesterday. If you can donate anything please do so. If you don't trust me, donate directly from one of the links at the bottom of the page. I'm sure every dollar will help!

What a sad state of affairs.  I've not updated this poor site in months!  I suppose that means that I should write something substantial and post it.  I've had several ideas, but I've lacked the gumption to sit and commit them to paper.

April 14, 2004
I've written my first "Buddhist-related" article, entitled,  "Compassion for Enemies".  I'd love to hear your feedback.

March 16, 2004
I just turned 30 today!  Whee!  This is going to be the best decade yet!

January 16, 2004
So far the new year is pretty much the same as the old year, but condensed.  Just over two weeks have passed and I find that, instead of being less busy, which was sort of the goal, I'm at least as busy as I was before.  That's the way it goes, I guess.  I've had the incredible opportunity to spend more time with my family though, and that's made it all worthwhile.  Nothing is more important to me than my wife and four kiddos.  I'd sacrifice everything to keep them all happy, safe and close to each other.  Life has a disturbing way of trying to disrupt the things we hold most precious, and my life has been no exception.  I'll never give in, though, "come hell or high water."

I've considered doing some auto-biographical work about my life over the last several years or so.  It's certainly been an adventure, and I can't say that it's been an overwhelmingly pleasant one.  If nothing else, I've learned a great deal about "the way things work," and a great deal about me.  Socrates said, "Know thyself."  I believe that's a journey I've been conscious of, more than ever before, in recent years.  At any rate, only if you're interested, keep an eye on this page for a possible posting in the very near future.

In other news, I'm happy to say that "The Delivery", once a short story, has begun to expand.  As previous readers of the site will recall, the story has been moved to the Stories section of the site.  Originally I hadn't planned to put any of my updates online, but I've changed my mind.  The original version of the story is still here, as well as what has officially become "Chapter One."  I'd love it if you read it and emailed me with your thoughts.

October 30, 2003
Before I say anything else, I'd like to offer a special thanks to all the kind folks at Fark.com who took the time to click the classified ad I took out to announce my short story, "The Delivery".  It was because of the overwhelmingly positive feedback I received there that I am pleased to announce that "The Delivery" has been moved to the Stories section of the site.  As of this date it has almost doubled in length from it's original short story form, and that extra material now forms what I am happy to call "Chapter One".  It is now, officially, a novel in progress.  I have left the original short story version online as a "teaser" for now.

Of course, if you're a publisher or an agent interested in reading more of this story, all you have to do is email me.

Frequent readers may also notice that "Shell" has been removed from the Stories section.  I have a few things in mind for it, so it's been taken offline for "retooling."

If you're one of the original Farkers who read and commented on The Delivery, I would be happy to give you access to the extended version of the story that comprises "Chapter One."  Feel free to email me with the request!

Wow.  It's been six months since I've written anything creative and over a year since I've updated this site.  That's pathetic.  I am happy, however, to present my latest short story, "The Delivery".  I've added it to the Short Stories section.  It's a lighthearted little piece I penned (literally, for the first half) last night.  I'm going to rate it PG-13 for some harsh language.  It's fun.  I enjoyed writing it, and I've enjoyed re-reading it.  I hope you'll feel the same.  Your feedback is appreciated!

I've also opted to merge the information from the former "Interests" page into the page called "The Writer".  Having two separate pages to talk about me seemed superfluous, so one was eliminated.

Finally, I've purged the older news from the front page and given it its own home, aptly titled "Older Site News"

A poem I wrote earlier this March, "Teirnan's Rose" is now online.

June 18, 2002
My latest short story, "The Bus Ride" is now online.  It is scheduled to be published in Amarillo Style magazine in their August 2002 issue.

Also, a slightly unfortunate update:  "The Bridge", which was scheduled to be published in "Amarillo Style" magazine in their March 2002 issue, didn't make it.  The final, top-rung editor at the corporate office thought the tone of the piece was too dark, although I had tried to keep it light, with a positive ending.  This has brought a lot of questions to my mind as far as dealing with conflict and resolution.  It is currently beyond my capabilities to write "fluffy bunny" stories, and I don't want to fall into the trap of "writing for the market".  Luckily, "The Bus Ride" is a piece I was already working with that is more of a philosophical/contemplative story, and not at all dark.

I'd love to hear your comments about either story, or about "conflict and resolution" or "writing for a market".  Drop me a line!

Part I of a major site overhaul.  The site features the new logo, thanks to Brandon Bargas.  (Thanks Brandon!)  Also making its first appearance online is a new story, called "The Bridge", which is scheduled to be published in "Amarillo Style" magazine in March, 2002.  Also, since "An Old Friend" was published in "Amarillo Style" in November 2001, I've updated the version online to reflect a few minor changes.  One last note, "Circus" has been slightly modified to rough out some edges and put in that one word I couldn't think of for the life of me a year ago.

July 9, 2001
Inspired by an idea I had while sitting in an airport, I've posted the new short story "An Old Friend" to the Short Stories section.

June 13, 2001
It's been way too long since my last update.  The spring semester of college, combined with my full time job and the birth of our third child really took up all my spare time!  However, I'm proud to begin to add, chapter by chapter, a new book I'm working on to the new Stories section.  The working title is "Shell".  Also, I've added Conduct and Redstone to the Poetry section, as well as The Best Days to the Short Stories section.

November 17, 2000
Added "On Ice" to the Short Stories section.

October 30, 2000
Added "Circus" to the Short Stories section.

October 25, 2000
"Design Flaw" is online!  It's in it's third draft, and ready for you the reader to read, comment and critique.  It's broken into part one and two, for your browsing convenience.

October 22, 2000
"Design Flaw" is almost finished!  A link and description for it has been added to the Short Stories section.

October 20, 2000
Added "Cold Feet" to the Poetry section.

October 13, 2000
Added "Connection Problem" to the Poetry section.

October 12, 2000
The first draft of the site is officially done.  New additions to the site from this point forward will be noted on this page.
