Kevin L. McDonald - The Writer | |
I enjoy working with computers. It's both my "real job" and a hobby. In that respect, it almost feels like I'm cheating. I get paid for doing what I love. I'm a computer/network technician, sporting a few certifications (A+, Microsoft MCSE NT4/2k/2k3, Cisco CCNA). I'm also a Linux enthusiast, using it both at home and in the workplace on occasion. I've used Debian and LindowsOS the most. I worked for Amarillo Diagnostic Clinic before they laid me off last May. I decided to start my own business, Definition Computers, and have really enjoyed the challenge. I waste a lot of time on the following web sites:
I try to be conscious of what I eat, but sometimes I go into trances and wake to discover that I've eaten "evil foods" like burgers, fat-soaked fried stuff, etc. Honestly, I'd love to go completely vegetarian, then take the leap and become a vegan, but it's tough. I did it for thirty days straight once until a rogue sausage ball bested my will. I recently took up yoga, just to see if I like it. After three classes, I plan to stick with it for a while. I'm the least flexible person I've ever met. I'm not much of an outdoorsy kind of guy, but I do enjoy camping with my family. In the summer of 2003 we camped out in the 100+ degree Texas heat in Palo Duro Canyon, then got chased off by baby bears in Coyote Creek Canyon, near Angel Fire, New Mexico. We occasionally rent a popup camper and go somewhere for a few nights. It's a great diversion, and I actually love turning off my cell phone and getting away from technology for those spurts of time. I enjoy movies that aren't insulting to my intelligence (Fight Club, YES - Tomb Raider, NO). All in all, I live a rather peaceful life enjoying family, friends, games and technology. I'm happy. I've been writing since I was very young. My mother taught me to read at an early age. Some of my first memories are of going to the library with mom and coming home with stacks of books to read. In pre-school, I was reading the same books that my teacher was reading to the class. My mother died when I was seven, but she left me with a very precious gift: Literacy. My father always challenged me to do fun, new things. He bought our family's first computer, an old "Trash 80", which he spent hours playing with. I took an interest as well, and somehow caught on faster than he did. He was the most technical truck driver I have ever met. If he was home, chances are he was in his workshop with a soldering iron in his hand and some electrical component in several pieces in front of him. My father, who died when I was nineteen, never got to see me become a professional computer guy, but he too left me with a gift: the tenacity to persevere, to experiment, and to pursue my hobbies as my career. My family moved around a lot when I was younger, so I attended many different schools in many states. I graduated high school in Bennett, Colorado in 1992. So now, I have a wonderful career as a computer technician and I'm pursuing another hobby just for fun: Writing. I'm thirty-one years old as of this writing and I finally earned an associates degree in English in 2003. I had put off college for my career many years ago. Finally, in the Fall semester of 2000, I changed my degree to English and re-enrolled at a local community college. I'm still pursuing a higher education to this day. One of the most important things in my life is my family. I've got three children who I adore and a wife who has put up with my crap for over twelve years now, for better or for worse. She deserves a medal, or psychoanalysis, or both. This web site is a central place for me to locate the things I write. I welcome any comments or critiques of anything posted here. Above all, thank you for visiting, and thank you for reading! --Kevin L. McDonald
